Simple Past & Past Progressive — Home Repairs

How it works

Use the past continuous (was/were + verb-ing) for an action that was in progress in the past. Use while for the longer background action, and when for the shorter action that interrupts it.

Examples: I was cooking when the lights went out.  ·  While she was cleaning, she found a leak.

Type the correct verb form in each blank. Use the simple past for the short, finished action and the past progressive (was/were + verb-ing) for the longer action in progress. The verb you need is in parentheses — change it to the correct form.

Fill in the Blanks (15)

✏️ Now use it: Write 2 sentences about a problem at YOUR home using while or when + the past continuous. Read them to a partner — can they understand your meaning?
