We add -er to adjectives to make the comparative form, and -est to make the superlative form.
General Rules:
- For most one-syllable adjectives: Add
-er or -est.
tall → taller → tallest
cold → colder → coldest
- For adjectives ending in
e: Just add r or st.
large → larger → largest
fine → finer → finest
- For adjectives with a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern: Double the final consonant before adding
-er/-est.
big → bigger → biggest
hot → hotter → hottest
- For adjectives with two or more syllables: Use
more and most instead of -er/-est.
beautiful → more beautiful → most beautiful
comfortable → more comfortable → most comfortable
Irregular Forms:
Some adjectives are irregular. They don't follow the standard pattern:
good → better → best
bad → worse → worst
far → farther → farthest
Remember: Don’t use both "more" and "-er" together. ❌ more taller is incorrect — just say ✅ taller.
