Many regular verbs add -ed for the past tense and past participle (work → worked). But -ed has three different pronunciations. The most important rule is: listen to the last SOUND of the base verb (not the last letter).
No extra syllable
Use /t/ after a voiceless sound.
No extra syllable
Use /d/ after a voiced sound (including vowels).
Extra syllable
Use /ɪd/ after /t/ or /d/.
| -ed sound | When? | Common final sounds (base verb) | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| /t/ voiceless | When the base verb ends in a voiceless sound | /p, k, f, s, ʃ (sh), tʃ (ch), θ (th)/ |
stop → stopped /stɒpt/ look → looked /lʊkt/ laugh → laughed /læft/ wash → washed /wɒʃt/ watch → watched /wɒtʃt/ |
| /d/ voiced | When the base verb ends in a voiced sound (or a vowel sound) | Most sounds except voiceless sounds and /t/, /d/ |
play → played /pleɪd/ clean → cleaned /kliːnd/ love → loved /lʌvd/ call → called /kɔːld/ rain → rained /reɪnd/ |
| /ɪd/ extra syllable | When the base verb ends in /t/ or /d/ | /t/, /d/ |
want → wanted /ˈwɒntɪd/ need → needed /ˈniːdɪd/ start → started /ˈstɑːrtɪd/ decide → decided /dɪˈsaɪdɪd/ |
| Common mistake | Better pronunciation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “work-id” for worked | worked = /wɜːrkt/ (no extra syllable) | The base verb ends with /k/ (voiceless) → /t/. |
| “play-t” for played | played = /pleɪd/ | The base verb ends with a vowel sound (voiced) → /d/. |
| No extra syllable for wanted | wanted = /ˈwɒntɪd/ (extra syllable) | The base verb ends with /t/ → /ɪd/. |
Teacher note: You can practice by sorting verbs into 3 columns (/t/, /d/, /ɪd/) and reading them aloud.
