Scene: It’s Yuki’s first day at a warehouse. Robert, the safety trainer, is explaining the safety rules before Yuki starts work.
ROBERT: Welcome aboard, Yuki! Before you start, we need to go over the safety rules. This is the most important part of your training.
YUKI: I’m ready. Safety first, right?
ROBERT: Exactly. Rule number one: always wear your safety vest, hard hat, and steel-toe boots in the warehouse. No exceptions.
YUKI: I have the vest and boots. Where do I get a hard hat?
ROBERT: I’ll give you one after this session. Rule number two: never walk under a raised forklift load.
YUKI: What does “raised load” mean?
ROBERT: Good question. When a forklift lifts a pallet high into the air, never walk underneath it. If the pallet falls, it could seriously injure you.
YUKI: Understood. I’ll stay clear of forklifts.
ROBERT: Also, make eye contact with the forklift driver before crossing in front of one. They need to see you.
YUKI: That makes sense. What should I do if I see a spill on the floor?
ROBERT: Don’t try to clean chemicals yourself. Put up a caution sign and report it to your supervisor immediately.
YUKI: What about water spills? Can I mop those?
ROBERT: Yes, water is fine to mop, but still put up the sign first so nobody slips.
YUKI: Where are the fire extinguishers and emergency exits?
ROBERT: Great question. There’s an extinguisher every 50 feet along the walls — see the red cabinets? And the emergency exits are marked with green signs.
YUKI: I see them. What’s the emergency number here?
ROBERT: Dial 911 for real emergencies. For smaller issues, call extension 4000 — that’s the safety office.
YUKI: If I don’t understand an instruction, is it okay to ask? I don’t want to slow anyone down.
ROBERT: Always ask! There are no stupid questions when it comes to safety. I’d rather explain something twice than see someone get hurt.
YUKI: Thank you, Robert. I feel much more confident now.
ROBERT: You’re going to do great, Yuki. Now let’s get your hard hat and take a tour of the floor.
