The Shopping List

Characters:

Setting: A supermarket.

(The scene opens in a supermarket. MARIA and LEO are standing in the produce aisle, staring at a crumpled piece of paper. Maria holds a shopping cart, which is already half full.)

MARIA: Okay, so… the first thing on the list is "fruit."

LEO: (Points to a bunch of bananas) Great. Let's get these. And some apples for my lunch.

MARIA: Ooh, look at those mangos! Let's get some. They're on **special offer** today, two for the price of one!

LEO: Are we sure we need mangos? The list just says "fruit."

MARIA: Well, they're fruit! It's an upgrade. (She tosses two mangos into the cart.) What's next? Oh, it's just a scribble. It looks like "cereal" or maybe "cheese"?

LEO: (Sighs) This is why we need to type our lists. Let's go with cheese. We ran out last week.

(They move to the dairy aisle. Maria sees a new type of fancy cheese.)

MARIA: Wow, this one looks delicious! It’s called "Aged Parmesan."

LEO: Isn't that a bit expensive? We usually get the shredded kind.

MARIA: But this one is so much better for our pasta night! It's a real treat. (She places a block of expensive cheese in the cart.)

(An employee, MS. ANYA, walks by, tidying the shelves. She notices their indecision.)

MS. ANYA: Can I help you two find anything?

MARIA: Oh, yes! We're trying to figure out what's on our **shopping list**, but it's a bit of a mess.

MS. ANYA: Let me have a look. (She glances at the list and smiles.) Ah, I see. "Cereal or cheese." A common problem! How about this? (She holds up a bag of shredded cheese.) This is our most popular brand, and it's on **sale**.

LEO: Perfect. That's exactly what we need. Thank you.

MS. ANYA: You're welcome. And for cereal, the cereal aisle is right around the corner.

(They thank her and head to the next aisle. Maria puts the new cheese back and grabs the shredded kind.)

MARIA: Okay, maybe we should stick to the basics. What's next? "Milk, eggs, and bread." This part is easy.

LEO: (Looking at a label) Make sure you get the low-fat milk. And check the **expiration date** on the eggs.

MARIA: (Picks up the milk and eggs, checks the dates.) Good to go! Now, the bread.

(They arrive at the bakery section. Maria picks up a fresh loaf of sourdough bread.)

LEO: What about the sliced bread we usually buy? It's cheaper.

MARIA: (Holds up the sourdough) But this one smells so fresh! It's worth the **extra cost**.

(Ms. Anya walks by again, carrying a box.)

MS. ANYA: That's a great choice. It was baked just this morning. You two seem to be making progress!

MARIA: We are! Thanks to your help. We're almost finished.

LEO: (Smiling) We just need to find the **checkout** now. And maybe a better way to write our list next time.
