Online or In-Store?

Setting: Sunday evening at Luis's apartment. Maya and Luis need a birthday gift for their friend Rosa, whose birthday is on Friday. They can't agree on whether to shop online or go to the mall. (About 5 minutes of pair speaking practice.)

Characters:

Maya: Rosa's birthday is Friday, and we still don't have a gift!

Luis: I know. So — should we order something online or go to the mall?

Maya: Online is so convenient. I can order from my couch right now.

Luis: But shipping takes three days. What if it arrives late?

Maya: We can pay for fast delivery. It's only a few dollars more.

Luis: Those “few dollars” add up. And if she doesn't like it, returns are such a pain.

Maya: Most websites have free returns now. You just print a label and drop off the box.

Luis: Still, you can't try things on or see the real color online. Remember that shirt I ordered? It looked blue on screen, but it was green!

Maya: (Laughs) That was pretty bad. Okay, what would you get her in a store?

Luis: Maybe a nice scarf or a candle set. Good quality you can feel with your hands.

Maya: A scarf is risky — what if it's the wrong style? At least online I can read the reviews first.

Luis: Reviews help, but in a store I can touch the fabric and check the quality myself.

Maya: True. And honestly, shopping together is more fun. We never do that anymore.

Luis: Exactly! We can grab lunch at the mall too. Shopping online is kind of lonely.

Maya: But the mall is so crowded, and parking is terrible.

Luis: We could go on a weekday evening. It'll be much quieter.

Maya: Hmm, wait — Rosa sent me her wishlist link last week. Let me check it.

Luis: Oh! If she already picked something out, ordering online makes total sense. No guessing.

Maya: It's a set of watercolor paints. And I have a discount code for fifteen percent off!

Luis: Even better. Let's order it now and choose fast shipping so it arrives by Thursday.

Maya: Done. I'll use the code at checkout. Total is thirty-four dollars with shipping.

Luis: Not bad. And if the colors are wrong, we can always exchange it.

Maya: See? Online shopping wins this time.

Luis: This time. But the next gift, we're going to the mall together.

Maya: (Smiling) Agreed. Now help me write the card — you're better with words.

Luis: “Happy birthday, Rosa! May your year be as colorful as these paints!”
