First Day of Class: Meeting a Classmate

Scene: A classroom before the lesson starts. Students are finding their seats and talking quietly.

EMMA: Hi, is this seat taken?

DAVID: No, go ahead.

EMMA: Thanks. I’m Emma. Nice to meet you.

DAVID: Nice to meet you too. I’m David.

EMMA: Is this your first time taking this class?

DAVID: Yes, it is. I’m a little nervous, to be honest.

EMMA: (smiles) Me too. I heard the teacher is very friendly, though.

DAVID: That’s good to hear. What made you sign up for this class?

EMMA: I want to improve my English for work. How about you?

DAVID: I’m studying for college, and I need better speaking skills.

EMMA: That makes sense. Do you live nearby?

DAVID: Yeah, about ten minutes away. I usually walk here.

EMMA: Nice. I take the bus. It’s not too bad.

DAVID: Maybe we can practice together sometime, like before class.

EMMA: I’d like that. It’s easier to learn when you have someone to practice with.

DAVID: Exactly.

The teacher walks into the classroom.

EMMA: Looks like class is starting.

DAVID: Yeah. Good luck!

EMMA: You too.
