Characters:
ANNA: A new student, a little shy but eager.
MARCO: A confident and friendly student.
MS. DAVIS: The welcoming and encouraging teacher.
Setting: A bright, airy classroom. Desks are arranged in small groups. It's the first day of a summer ESL class.
(The scene opens with ANNA entering the classroom nervously. She looks around, holding her bag tightly. MARCO is already sitting at a desk, looking at his phone, but he looks up and smiles.)
MARCO: (Friendly) Hi! Is this ESL Intermediate?
ANNA: (Hesitantly) Yes… I think so. I’m Anna.
MARCO: Nice to meet you, Anna! I’m Marco. This is my first time in this class. Are you new here too?
ANNA: Yes, my first time. I’m a little… nervous.
MARCO: Don’t worry! Me too, a little. But it looks like a nice classroom. And summer classes are usually fun. Where are you from, Anna?
ANNA: I’m from South Korea. And you?
MARCO: I’m from Brazil. It’s my third summer in California. I really want to improve my English for my job. I’m an engineer.
ANNA: Oh, wow! That’s interesting. I work in marketing. I need English for meetings and emails.
(MS. DAVIS enters the classroom. She has a warm smile and carries a stack of papers.)
MS. DAVIS: Good morning, everyone! Welcome to our Intermediate ESL Summer class. My name is Ms. Davis, and I'm so happy to see you all here.
(Anna and Marco sit up straighter.)
MS. DAVIS: Please, find a seat wherever you feel comfortable. We have a great summer ahead of us, full of learning and speaking English. Don’t be shy! This is a safe place to practice and make mistakes. That’s how we learn, right?
ANNA: (Whispering to Marco) She seems very nice.
MARCO: (Whispering back) Yeah, she does.
MS. DAVIS: Today, we’ll start with some introductions and a fun activity to get to know each other. I know the first day can feel a bit nerve-wracking, but I promise, we’ll have a lot of fun. My goal is for all of you to feel more confident speaking English by the end of this summer.
(Ms. Davis walks over to Anna and Marco’s table.)
MS. DAVIS: Hello there! What are your names?
MARCO: Hi, Ms. Davis. I’m Marco.
ANNA: (Smiling more confidently) And I’m Anna.
MS. DAVIS: Welcome, Marco and Anna! It’s great to have you both. Marco, where are you from?
MARCO: I’m from Brazil.
MS. DAVIS: Wonderful! And Anna?
ANNA: I’m from South Korea.
MS. DAVIS: Excellent! We have a diverse group this summer, which is fantastic for practicing different accents and perspectives. Are you both looking forward to anything specific this summer, outside of class?
MARCO: I want to visit some national parks!
ANNA: I hope to go to the beach a lot!
MS. DAVIS: Those sound like great plans! Well, let’s get started. Everyone, please stand up if you can…
(Anna and Marco exchange a look, still a little nervous, but with a growing sense of ease. They stand up, ready for the class to begin.)
(FADE OUT.)
