A Community Garden

Characters:

Scene: A sunny afternoon in a community garden. MARIA is watering tomato plants. JAVIER is pulling weeds from his small plot. LIAM enters, looking frustrated with a small bag of tools.

LIAM: (Sighing loudly) This is impossible. I give up.

(Maria looks up and smiles warmly.)

MARIA: What's the matter, Liam? It’s your first week, right?

LIAM: Yeah. I don't know what I'm doing. My plants aren't growing. I think I put the wrong fertilizer on them.

JAVIER: Maybe it just needs more time. Some plants are slow at the beginning.

LIAM: I don't think so. I probably ruined them. I'm not good at this. I've watched all the videos, but it's not the same.

MARIA: Hey, don't worry. We all started somewhere. When I first joined, I tried to grow peppers and ended up with tiny, sad-looking leaves.

LIAM: (Laughing a little) Really? You have the best garden here.

MARIA: (Smiling) Yes! But I learned from my mistakes, and I learned from my neighbors. That's the nice thing about a community garden. We help each other.

(Maria walks over to Liam's plot and examines his plants.)

MARIA: Hmm, these leaves look a little yellow. You might be giving them too much water.

LIAM: Too much? I thought they needed a lot.

MARIA: A common mistake. Try watering them every other day instead of every day. And feel the soil first. If it's still wet, wait.

JAVIER: She's right. The soil is key. I can give you some of my compost if you want. It's very good for tomatoes.

LIAM: (Surprised) You would do that? Thank you, Javier. I don't have any good compost.

JAVIER: Of course. We share what we have. That's how we grow a good harvest together.

MARIA: Exactly! We are a community. We share knowledge, we share tools, and sometimes, we share our vegetables. Last year, Javier gave me a huge zucchini!

JAVIER: (Chuckles) And Maria gave me some of her famous salsa. The recipe is a secret, though.

MARIA: (Winking at Liam) It’s a secret ingredient.

LIAM: Wow. This is a lot nicer than I expected. I just thought it was a place to grow vegetables. I didn't think I would find friends.

MARIA: Well, now you have both. Don't worry about the plants. We'll get them growing again. We’ll help you.

LIAM: Thank you, both of you. I really appreciate it. I feel much better now.

(Liam takes a deep breath and looks at his plot with a newfound determination.)

LIAM: Okay, let's try this again. What's the first step?

(Javier and Maria smile at each other. The three of them stand together, looking at the small plants. The sun shines brightly.)

(FADE OUT.)
