Scene: Aisha just moved into an apartment without a washer and dryer. It’s her first time at a laundromat. James, the attendant, helps her.
AISHA: Excuse me — is this your first time here too, or do you work here?
JAMES: I work here! I’m James, the attendant. Is this your first time at a laundromat?
AISHA: Yes. My apartment doesn’t have a washer, and I have no idea how these machines work.
JAMES: No worries — it’s easy once you’ve done it once. First, separate your clothes: whites in one machine, colors in another.
AISHA: Okay. How much does one load cost?
JAMES: The large washers are $4.50 per load. The dryers are 25 cents for every 7 minutes.
AISHA: Do the machines take cash, or do I need a card?
JAMES: Both. You can use coins, or you can load money onto a laundry card at that machine by the door.
AISHA: I think I’ll get a laundry card. It sounds more convenient than carrying quarters.
JAMES: Good choice. Most regulars use the card. Now — do you have detergent?
AISHA: Detergent… that’s the soap, right? I forgot to buy some!
JAMES: That’s okay. We sell single-use packets right here for $1.50. You’ll also want dryer sheets for the dryer.
AISHA: What do dryer sheets do?
JAMES: They reduce static — you know, when your clothes stick together — and they make everything smell fresh.
AISHA: Got it. How long does a wash cycle take?
JAMES: About 30 minutes for a normal cycle. Then move your clothes to a dryer for 40 to 50 minutes.
AISHA: Should I stay here the whole time, or can I leave and come back?
JAMES: Most people leave and come back. Just don’t leave your clothes unattended for too long — someone might move them.
AISHA: Good tip. Is there Wi-Fi here? I could study while I wait.
JAMES: There is! The password is on the sign by the folding tables.
AISHA: This is much less scary than I thought. Thank you for explaining everything, James.
JAMES: Anytime, Aisha. After today, you’ll be a laundromat expert!
